Mushroom lamps are everywhere right now — and for good reason. That soft dome silhouette, the warm pool of light, the unmistakable 70s feel: it's a shape that makes a room feel instantly calmer. But most of the mushroom lamps flooding the market are mass-produced overseas, moulded from virgin plastic, and shipped halfway around the world.
Ours isn't. The Triformia Mushroom Lamp is designed and 3D printed to order in our UK studio, from plant-based materials, in six matte colours. Here's why that matters — and how to pick the right one for your space.
What is a mushroom lamp, and why is everyone buying one?
A mushroom lamp is exactly what it sounds like: a wide, rounded dome shade sitting on a slim cylindrical base, like a mushroom cap on its stem. The style took off in the late 60s and 70s and has come roaring back as part of the wider retro-modern interiors trend.
The appeal is more than nostalgia. The dome shape directs light downwards and outwards in a soft, even glow rather than glaring in your eyes — which is exactly what you want from an ambient lamp on a bedside table, sideboard or shelf. Ours adds a detail you won't find on a moulded version: fine vertical ribs across the shade and base, created by the 3D printing process itself. When the warm LED comes on, the ribbed surface catches the light in layered highlights, so the lamp becomes part of the lighting effect rather than just a housing for a bulb.
A more sustainable way to make a lamp
Sustainability claims in home décor are often vague, so here's specifically what makes a 3D printed lamp a lower-impact choice:
Plant-based material. Our lamps are printed in PLA, a bioplastic derived from renewable plant sources such as corn starch, rather than petroleum-based virgin plastic.
Printed to order, not overproduced. Traditional manufacturing means minimum order quantities in the thousands — and unsold stock that ends up in landfill. 3D printing means we make what's ordered. No warehouse full of surplus lamps, no waste from tooling and moulds.
Additive, not subtractive. 3D printing builds the lamp layer by layer using only the material the lamp actually needs, instead of cutting shapes out of larger blocks and binning the offcuts.
Made in Britain. Every lamp is printed in our own UK studio, which means it travels a few hundred miles to reach you — not a few thousand on a container ship. It also means we control quality on every single unit.
Efficient LED light. Warm LED illumination sips power compared with old incandescent bulbs, so the running cost of leaving your lamp glowing all evening is pennies.
Minimal packaging. No polystyrene, no oversized boxes — just what's needed to get the lamp to you safely.
One honest note: 3D printed pieces carry fine layer lines and subtle surface variations. These aren't defects — they're the fingerprint of the process, and they mean no two lamps are exactly alike.
Six matte colours — which one suits your room?
Every Mushroom Lamp pairs the same softly glowing white ribbed shade with a matte base in one of six colours:
Sky Blue — fresh and playful, a lovely contrast against the warm glow. Great in kids' rooms, home offices, or anywhere that needs a lift.
Sakura Pink — a soft pastel with a gentle, cosy character. Beautiful on a bedside table or dressing table.
Sage Green — muted and earthy, made for calm, natural interiors with linen, oak and houseplants.
Terracotta — the most unapologetically 70s of the six. A warm clay tone that leans fully into the retro look.
Latte — a creamy neutral that disappears into softly styled, Scandi-leaning spaces and lets the glow do the talking.
Charcoal — deep matte black for modern and monochrome rooms, where the lit shade floats above a base that all but vanishes at night.
Where a mushroom lamp works best
This is an ambient accent light, not a main room light — and that's the point. It's designed for the spots where overhead lighting feels harsh:
On a bedside table, it gives you a warm, low glow for winding down without lighting up the whole room. On a desk or home office shelf, it softens the edges of screen-heavy evenings. On a sideboard, hallway console or display shelf, it turns a dead corner into the cosiest spot in the house. And because the shade looks sculptural switched off, it earns its place in daylight too.
Styling it with the rest of your space
The Mushroom Lamp is part of a family of ribbed, 3D printed pieces, so it's easy to build a coherent look. Pair it with Lamp 019, our taller sculptural ribbed table lamp, for a layered lighting scheme — one at seating height, one on a shelf or sideboard. Or echo the fluted texture without adding more light using our ribbed vases and planters, which share the same made-to-order ethos and profile.
Mushroom lamp FAQs
Is a mushroom lamp bright enough to read by?
It's designed for ambient and decorative light rather than task lighting. Close up — on a bedside table, say — the warm LED gives enough light for winding down, but if you read small print for hours, pair it with a dedicated reading light.
Are 3D printed lamps durable?
Yes. PLA is a rigid, stable material, and the ribbed structure adds strength. Treat it like any table lamp: keep it away from open flames, strong heat sources and water, and wipe it with a dry cloth.
What's in the box?
The white ribbed shade, the LED lamp base in your chosen colour, and a power cable. No bulb-hunting required.
How long does delivery take?
Orders are printed and dispatched from our UK studio, with free 48-hour tracked delivery on orders over £25.
The short version
If you want the retro mushroom lamp look without the mass-produced footprint, a 3D printed version made to order in Britain is about as good as it gets: plant-based material, no overproduction, short delivery miles, and a ribbed glow you simply can't mould.
